3 Things to Know

1. Oak Hill has a huge Major Championship Pedigree

Oak Hill has hosted 6 Major Championships, as well as The Ryder Cup, Senior Majors and 2 US Amateur Championships. The prevailing story of all of these Major Tournaments is the tough test of golf which Oak Hill offers. Driving the ball straight and solid iron play are going to be the main focus of the players to combat the venues toughest challenge yet. The organisers have decided to lengthen the course to 7394 yards whilst maintaining the par of 70. Tough to say the least!

2. The Course has been designed by nature

One of the talking points this week will be the dramatic landscapes you see at Oak Hill, with rock deposits and large scores out of the earth seen all around the property. The architect of this was not the designer, Donald Ross. The one to blame was far older. The Great Wisconsin Glacier, receded through the property at the end of the ice age, bringing with it massive geological power and leaving its mark on North-Eastern American Golf.

3. The Fifth Hole has had multiple faces

The fifth hole, used to be an innocuous par 3 that was deemed too boring for major golf. No fewer than 3 redesigns have taken place with this year’s major showing off a 180-yard hole with a well bunkered, two-tiered green. A fun fact about this redesign, is a plaque, commemorating 4 hole-in-ones from the 1989 US Open, now sits in a location where there is no hole! If any of the players see that plaque, they have gone wrong somewhere!

Our Top 3 Picks

1.  John Rahm

How can you start a top pick list without mentioning the winner of year’s first major? Masters Champion John Rahm is the favourite this week and the team at GSS don’t disagree. His form at the moment is simply stunning, with 4 wins so far in 2023, meaning he simply cannot be overlooked as our top pick.

2. Justin Thomas

Last year’s winner Justin Thomas seems to be a logical follower in our number 2 spot. From Tee-To-Green JT has been as solid as ever, with no glaring problems presenting themselves until he reaches the green. His current lack of form is directly blameable on his putting which has landed him 138th in the field in strokes gained on the greens.

3. Max Homa

Only a few players can rival Rahm’s form of late, and Max Homa is one of them. With 3 wins in 2023, including one a as a member of the President’s Cup Team, Homa is certainly a hot prospect for the PGA Championships. His stellar driving of late and 10 best putting stats on Tour should make him a real contender come Sunday.
